Red Rock Ranch Rodeo 2005

Jerry Henning and a couple of friends decided to put a team together for the 2nd Annual Red Rock Ranch Rodeo in Medford. The team was Jerry Henning, his son Russell Henning, Brian Pfeiffer and Alex Ilie. This was a rodeo full of different timed events of average things you do on the ranch.

Trailer Loading

Team: Four mounted riders
Time Limit: 300 seconds (5 minutes)
Description/Rules:

  • Cattle with be in numbered or colored groups. Riders work together to cut, move, and load three same numbered/colored cattle across foul line and load into trailer within allotted time. Announcer starts timer and calls the assigned calf group when the first team member crosses the foul line. No more than five head of cattle may cross over foul line or run will result in full time score. One rider may dismount inside the foul line to haze and shut trailer door. Time stops when cattle are loaded and trailer door is shut and excess cattle, if any, are outside the foul line.

Team Branding

Team: One mounted roper, two muggers, and one brander
Time Limit: 3 calves in 360 seconds (6 minutes)
Description/Rules:

  • Time starts when the roper crosses the start line. The roper ropes a calf with a legal head catch. When the roper catches a calf, the muggers may mug the calf anywhere. The brander may not leave the circle until the rope is removed. Any team member may run the branding iron back to the circle and the branding iron must be taken back to the circle after each calf. Time stops when the branding iron is taken back to the circle after the last calf is branded. If the roper makes an illegal catch on a calf, the rope cannot be dallied or the team will receive a full-time score. Four-loop limit per calf. The calf must be branded on the right hip behind flank.

Remuda Race

Team: Three team members unmounted, one team member mounted and one horse unsaddled.
Time Limit: 180 second (3 minutes)
Description/Rules:

  • The three unmounted team members and the unsaddled horse will be in the designated area at one end of the arena. The mounted team member will ride from the opposite end of the arena to the designated area and dismount. The unmounted team members will unsaddle and unbridle the rider's horse and saddle and bridle the other horse, which the rider will then ride back to the starting point. The saddle must have a front and back cinch and both must be buckled upon the riders return to the starting point.

Ranch Bronc Riding - Jackpot Event

  • Ride as well as you can for eight seconds. Standard working saddle must be used. No PRCA riggings allowed. No hobbling of one or both stirrups. Horse must be saddled as you would for every day use. A regular bucking horse leather halter and bronc reign must be used (provided by stock contractor). A re-ride may be awarded at the Judge's discretion. Flamboyant style is encouraged. Riders can get a maximum score of 150 points (50 point for horse, 50 points for rider, and 50 points for style).

Alex decided that he was going to do the bronc riding with 2 broken ribs.


Saddle Steer

Team: One mounted rider, two muggers, and one cow rider
Time Limit: 360 seconds (6 minutes)
Description/Rules:

  • Time starts when the cows are released from the bucking chute. Cows will be haltered with rope attached. Muggers or cow rider must get the rope to the mounted rider to dally the rope. Muggers and cow rider saddle the cow. Once the rider is aboard the cow, the dally is released. Cow must be hazed across finish line. Time stops when cow crosses finish line with rider aboard or time runs out. If the rider bucks off, the cow may be re-caught, but must be mounted on chute side of the finish line.

Steer Doctoring

Team: Up to three team members as mounted ropers and one unmounted team member (the "doctor") waiting in the circle.
Time Limit: 180 seconds (3 minutes)
Description/Rules:

  • A roper must catch the calf in any legal head catch. The calf must be held with no more than one rope and the two other team members must throw the calf where it's roped. Once thrown, the "doctor" can leave the circle and mark an "X" on the calf's forehead. The roper must stay mounted and the "doctor" cannot run back to the circle to stop time until the rope is off the calf. If a calf is dragged after it's off its feet, the team will get a full-time score. If the doctor moves to go back to the circle before all ropes are removed, the team will receive a full-time score. If the roper makes an illegal catch on a calf, the rope cannot be dallied or the team will receive a full-time score.

Pasture Doctoring

Team: Two mounted ropers, one mugger, and one "doctor"
Time Limit: 360 seconds (6 minutes)
Description/Rules:

  • Time starts when first mounted roper crosses the start line. The mugger and the doctor must wait in the designated circle. Mounted ropers must head/heel calf in any legal catch. When the calf is roped, the mugger may leave the circle and help throw the calf. The mugger then removes the head rope and places it on both front legs. When calf is stretched, the doctor may leave the circle and mark an "X" on the calf's forehead. Time stops when the doctor re-enters the circle.
